Each May, Better Hearing and Speech Month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association founded the month of recognition in 1927 to draw attention to the role of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association members in providing life-altering treatments for those in need.1 The theme for Better Hearing and Speech Month 2022 is “Connecting People.”
Hearing, voice, speech, and language disorders exact a far-reaching toll on public health and individual well-being. At least 46 million people in the U.S. have hearing or other communication disorders that affect how they engage with their environments.2 These disorders can occur at any age and in all ethnic and socioeconomic groups.2 With this year’s theme, the goal is to connect those affected with support and treatment options.
For practice owners, this is a great time to educate and inform your current patients and potential patients! Creating a marketing campaign for your practice centered on Better Speech and Hearing Month promotes a significant cause while reminding everyone of the vital role that hearing plays in overall well-being.
By bringing attention to these hearing-related causes, you can add new themes to your marketing materials while also providing value to your marketing with relevant information.
Consider creating a special promotion for the month that goes along with the theme. This could be anything from discounts on hearing protection or free hearing examinations for young adults.
ASHA’s 2022 Better Hearing and Speech Month campaign will focus on the breadth of services provided by audiologists and speech-language pathologists—with weekly themes tied to the settings where the public may access services.1
The themes for the month are scheduled:
- Week 1: Schools
- Week 2: Inpatient Settings
- Week 3: Home-Based Care
- Week 4: Outpatient Settings
